Flying Dogs?

My owner was recently talking about a plane trip he was on and (I can't hardly believe it!) there was a dog kept in a carrying case underneath the seat of another passenger??!?!?

I could hardly believe my brown furry ears. To begin, I guess the whining dog was rather annoying for the rest of the passengers. But, really people, what do you expect? That guy doesn't want to be in that bag on that airplane!

It just seems so unnatural to me! Let's recap... what do we enjoy?

  • Walks and exercise with our owners
  • Great tasting, natural dog food and treats
  • A good squeaky toy or frisbee
  • Fire hydrant
  • A soft, cuddly place on the couch (with a pillow)
  • Ride in a bag, under a seat, on an airplane... ABSOLUTELY NOT!

If my owners are reading this, don't even think about it! I don't need to be anywhere in a big hurry. I prefer old fashioned, slow-moving travel. Think of me as the "John Madden" of the dog world!

Dog in a bag, under a seat at 32,000 feet in the air...the roar of the engines, the smell of the peanuts (ok, I wouldn't mind that), the changes in air pressure on my sensitive dog ears!?!?!?

John, save me a seat on that bus!!!

Art Bark Fest

Ok, I don't care what kind of a party you're having, but if you call it "something or other AND Bark Fest," then you're on to something!

If you're going to be around North Lake Tahoe, California over the September 13th weekend, check out this festival that combines a love of art, wine and animals (which is just awesome by the way!).

Get this... animal art will be on display!?!? Sounds like I should submit my interpretation of Whistler's Mother, or does this suggest a strong emphasis on the wine?!?!?

If your guy is partial to water, be sure to enter him in the Dog Lake Jump (I stay dry). And, there is live music - not certain whether it is also provided by the animals.

Sounds like good entertainment value... this brown dog says, "enjoy!!!"

Gary Responds... to a health question

Nettie from Michigan writes:

I have a 2 yr old golden lab and his name is "fatboy." For the past (2) days he has been vomiting everything that he eats or drinks. The lady that I got "fatboy" from says he is up-to-date on his shots, but did not provide me with documentation. Can or does my beloved "baby" have parvo?

Nettie, this is such a serious health question that it is hard for me to have fun with it. Canine parvovirus disease is indeed a serious matter.

However, given your dog's age (typically a problem for much younger pups) and his name (fatboy may have just ingested something very disagreeable), my best guess is that he does not have parvo.

After two days of these symptoms, it is important that you consult your guy's Vet immediately. He is likely dehydrated, at a minimum, and you need a professional to fully diagnose and treat the problem.

Thank you for your question via Ask Gary. Be sure to let us know how fatboy is doing - this brown dog's prayers are with him (and you).

We Rescue Them and They Rescue Us...

I live in a part of the USA that is susceptible to hurricanes and, as I write this, we are well into hurricane season.

I don't like like to reflect on my own hurricane experiences because that gets into a bit of doggie trauma - doing well though, thank you.

But, I do want you to know about an organization that trains guys like me (too bad I'm too old now) to perform human rescue in disaster areas.

The Search Dog Foundation, ironically, first rescues dogs from shelters and other breed groups that are suitable for rescue training, then trains them for service. They receive no government funding.

Please check it out and donate! You get extra dog-sense credit for that!!!
