My dog fence allows me to run free outside without risking my security and safety or the safety of anyone else.
It is also very convenient for my family to let me out, inside the confines of my fence, to do my dog business without having to always take me out on a leash. Free fertilizer!
All dog fence considerations, like many things concerning your favorite pet, require a bit of dog-sense when thinking through all the options. Is the space adequate for your dog? Is your fencing option secure enough to keep him in, and others out. You probably also want to be sure that whatever you do is a pleasing addition to your yard or property, rather than an eyesore.
This desire to maximize green space and minimize physical barriers has led many people to consider or to install “underground electronic containment systems,” otherwise known as an "invisible fence," sold under several different brand names.
These systems (yes, they are systems and include a training component) are inexpensive as compared to any standard fencing you might get at a home improvement store or from a fencing company. Prices range from about $100 to $800, or more, for installed systems.
If you have one of these systems professionally installed, a professional trainer will provide comprehensive training so your pet completely understands his boundaries.
You and your trainer teach your dog to avoid the boundaries of your property using visual flag cues, audio "warning beeps" and training eventually progresses to include "static correction," otherwise known as a mild electric shock!
Many people swear by these systems and have had good success with them. But, this dog's view is that any sort of electric shock is not my favorite thing. I am glad we have a traditional dog fence or that someone in my family will regularly take me out on a leash to get exercise!
My only other thought on this topic is that if you have to choose between putting your dog on a chain staked in your yard and an invisible/electric fence, give the latter a try. Have you ever heard that expression, "choking like a yard-dog!" Don't want to go there!
Better yet, go pick up the leash. The exercise is good for you, too!
