Dog Grooming Considerations
When it comes to dog grooming, there are two types of dog owners. Those that prefer to use a dog groomer and those that prefer to be do-it-yourself groomers. This is usually at least partly determined by the types of dogs you are used to having, perhaps your family's "dog tradition." My family has a tradition of owning larger, work-type dogs with manageable coats that have been relatively easy to keep well groomed. If you have a breed with longer hair, it may be a good idea to start them with a professional groomer to see and understand the result. This can help you determine whether you want to take on the task yourself. Of course, generally speaking, time and money are key factors. Regardless, you need to be sure your dog is getting good care.
Looking Good!
This is personal, but let's talk about me! I get a bath at least once per month, unless an emergency cleaning is required. My hair is not very long, but does shed a bit, so being cleaned and brushed is better for everyone.I love a good brushing and your dog probably does too! My nails get clipped every eight to ten weeks. It is almost impossible to sit still and allow my nails to be cut by family members, so they decided it's less stressful for both of us to allow the groomer to do it. It works out well, but do keep in mind that overgrown nails can be painful. So, be sure to give your dog good care by not allowing too much time to pass for a nail trimming.
Dog Grooming Pros
If you want to seek out a good local professional, your dog's Doc and other dog owners can give you the best suggestions for your local community. When checking out a new groomer, understand that most may not be too excited about allowing you to watch as they are doing their work. If you are present, often times a dog will become agitated and it will be a more difficult dog grooming session for everyone involved. However, some will allow you to watch from a distance. You want your dog's experience to be a good one and also positive for you. Do take a good look behind the scenes at the dog grooming shop to be sure it is clean and well kept. Those that specialize and only do dog grooming are likely to do the best job and provide the best service. Be sure to talk to the groomers and find a place that you like and trust. The price charged will usually include a bath. Even if you prefer to bathe your dog yourself, should you decide to use a groomer, go ahead and allow them to provide the bath. It is easier on the groomer if they bathe the dog and dry them to ensure a good cut. In some areas you can even have a mobile groomer come right to your home and provide the service. They are a bit more expensive, but you can't beat the convenience. You also don't have to worry about taking your dog too far away from his familiar surroundings. I love a road trip, but some of us don't travel well.
