Please Consider Dog Rescue!
You must consider dog rescue if you are thinking of bringing a new adult dog or puppy into your family. If my family had not rescued me, enabling me to acquire all these great keyboard skills, SensitiveBrownDog.com would still be a dream stuck in my dog head.

Thrilled to be Rescued!
Adopting a dog saves lives, is cost effective and easy. Shelters and other organizations place dogs for adoption daily. There are a lot of cute guys out there waiting for a home. Yes, shelters will take in abandoned, neglected and stray dogs. They will also take in dogs that are a mis-match for their previous family. If you have, or know of someone who has, an unwanted dog, please take it to a good local shelter that can find a better family match.
Online Shelters?
Being a brown dog that is very in tune with the internet, I really got excited about the idea of an online shelter for dog rescue when I first started seeing them. Please understand that all of the organizations that you see online have a local shelter in the background, or multiple ones, that it represents. There is no big "dog clearing house" type shelter that ships you the dog that you pick out on the internet. So, if you want to preview a few dogs, just do a Google or Yahoo search specifying "dog rescue + your location" and you will see the local shelters that have an online presence. But, not all shelters have an online presence or one where you can get on your keyboard and pick out dogs. And, even if they do, the listings are not always 100% current and up-to-date.
Stay Local
The very best bet is to locate your local dog rescue via word-of-mouth from friends, acquaintances, the local Vet or through your local telephone directory. Then, make a trip to one or two and see who might be available for you to fall in love with and take home. Particularly if he is an older dog, the staff there can help you to understand his background and whether he may have some behavior challenges you need to help him work through. Note that behavior challenges are the exception. Most just need a good home! The staff at the dog rescue will update you on all the proper care, shots needed, spay or neutering costs for your new family member. A good "one stop shop." The other advantage in working with a local dog rescue is that they can be on the look-out for what you want, in the event that you have a particular desire and they don't currently have a dog that meets your interest.
Purebred Dog Rescue
Even if you have your heart set on a specific breed, please consider dog rescue first. Look around your local shelters, you may find exactly what you are looking for. Be careful though, there are a lot of good fellows out there waiting for a home and one may capture your heart! If you can't find your preferred purebred nearby, there are some other
good resources
to pursue. A little patience and you can get close to, if not exactly, the type of dog you want and provide a home to a guy that really needs one.
Don't Sweat the Fine Print
When you decide to adopt, there is some paperwork involved. Don't be intimidated by the adoption agreement. You may see some language in there that talks about them taking the dog back if certain conditions are not being met. Keep in mind that there are puppy mills and unethical people around the dog world that are not like you. All you are trying to do is find a loving dog that will fit nicely into your family. The dog rescue is trying to look after the best interest of the dog. So, if there is anything in the paperwork that you don't understand or aren't comfortable with, discuss it with the staff at the shelter. If you are not fully satisfied with the explanations, move on to another shelter. However, this will be very difficult to do if you have already fallen in love and would also be a very rare circumstance. Thank you for saving a dog's life and enjoy your new guy!
