Getting your dog involved in dog sports can really bring the best out of your smart, fit fella.
I've never competed, but watching these guys makes me want to give it a go. Their quickness, precision and the fun they have is really inspiring and great to watch.
Brown Dog Athlete?
I know it's hard to tell, but I do play a pretty rowdy game of fetch and in my youth would have been a great
frisbee dog!
In addition to some great sports, there are also plenty of other ways to spend some healthy and fun time with your fella. Other good activities to consider are
dog backpacking
and
surfing.
Agility Events
One of the most exciting dog events is that crazy obstacle course thing, where there are different kinds of jumps, climbing obstacles, weave poles, tunnels and something called a "pause table."
I know that if I got going, I would need a break in the action!
There is a predetermined direction and way in which the dog athlete has to take the course and a handler (maybe that's you) encourages your guy off-leash to make the right moves.
As you can see, it goes pretty fast and is very exciting!
Flyball
Flyball is another one of those crazy, fun and really fast dog sports. Think of it as a relay race for your dog athlete.
Two teams race on parallel tracks through an electronic gate, over four hurdles to a flyball box - where they retrieve a ball and return as fast as they can go.
They try really hard not to miss a jump or drop the ball.
These guys are really quick, even faster than I am when I hear those exciting words, "Gary, wanna treat?"
Agility Training and Flyball in Your Own Backyard!
You don't have to be an active participant in these dog sports to enjoy some great training time and fun with your dog.
If you have a highly active guy that loves to please you, you may want to develop your own agility course in your back yard or a nearby field.
Or if, like me, your dog loves to play fetch with the tennis ball, perhaps flyball is your prime choice among these dog sports.
As time goes on and you want to get involved in more organized events or just want to see some great dog competition, there is plenty of
Agility
and
Flyball
event information available.
A fit and well exercised dog is a happy dog! He will love you for it!
